This year, our Varsity Boys’ Soccer team was made up of 16 people, half of them seniors; I was the only one new to the team. For as long as I have been here, the team has won the Condor League. This year, we looked properly geared to repeat the feat – making it five consecutive League titles. We had a lot of trouble at the beginning of the season really playing the kind of possession game that our coach Derf preaches. We won most of our games, but not by as much as we should have. Our second to last regular season game was against our archrival, Cate, on their home field. At half-time, we were up 2-0, but by no means dominating the game. About ten minutes into the second half, everything clicked. Our backs started making long runs into the corners and all of our passes were quick and to the right player. Very soon, the score was up to 5-0, and Cate’s squad was just not in the game anymore. It was easily the most beautiful half of soccer I have ever been involved in and capped of a great run in the Condor League (yes, that record 5th!). It was surely the highlight for many of the seniors soccer carriers at Thacher.
In addition to a great soccer season, the beginning of second semester brought with it an increase in free time for me. I had less homework and, having gotten into college early admission (to Bowdoin, in Maine), I was finished with applications. This finally allowed me to hang out in the dorm (Lower School) with all of the freshmen guys in a more relaxed way. Being a Prefect was great in the fall because I could see the kids coming together as a class first-hand, but, now, being able to spend even more time getting to know some of the kids who will be in charge of the School in a few years has been great. Although being a Prefect in the freshman dorm means living apart from most of the guys in my class, it’s still one of the most enjoyable aspects of my day.
