Adios, Thacher; Hello, Bowdoin!

by Willy :: Thursday January 12, 2006

My summer was a good mix of new (at least sort of) and old. For the first time since going off to high school, I was at home for an entire month-June-while I was working around the house for my dad. In July, my family, minus my sister (home-stay program in Chile), went on a river rafting trip on the Salmon River in Idaho. For the first week, my former roommates Justin and Will, along with Ed and Ox and their dads, were with us and a couple other families. The second week, my mom headed home, leaving just the guys.

Packing for college in July was a little weird, but that’s what I had to do, since we were heading from home in Woodside (south of San Francisco) to Maine to stay with my grandma until college started for me. It was a restful summer.

College has started. I thought it would be really strange not going to Thacher this fall, but the kids here at Bowdoin are really similar, even if the social life is not. My roommates hail from Villanova, PA (Jason) and London, England (Matt) and both of them are really cool kids. It was really nice moving in after boarding school because I didn’t have my mom trying to move in for me and I didn’t bring tons of extra stuff like floral drawer lining (I’m not kidding). I tried rowing crew for a couple of days, but decided that I would do fall-ball for lacrosse instead of waking up at 5:30 every morning for practice and having another one in the afternoon. The food here is amazing, number 1 in the country, which, as you all know from Thacher’s amazing Richard Maxwell and Bon Appetit, makes a huge difference in the quality of life.
