Part of my goal for my last semester at Thacher was to take classes from teachers who, in some sense, define the School for me, regardless of their subject. I am not a great English student, and I have had serious challenges dealing with Shakespeare, yet I decided to take an elective solely on The Bard because Mr. Robinson, our Director of Studies, was teaching it. Throughout my four years here (and many years before), he has been a very interesting and influential member of the community, but he only teaches 1 English elective in the spring of senior year, so I had never had too much time to interact with him, especially intellectually. I continued taking his elective, which changed to an introduction to Russian Literature, for the fourth quarter. The experience has taught me that sticking with subject areas you’re already good at may give you better grades, but you get far more out of a class with a great teacher, even if it’s on a topic you don’t necessarily like.
