Across the Sierra

by William :: Saturday September 17, 2005

This fall, I decided to go on the Trans-sierra EDT (Extra Day Trip—another name for the week-long camping trips at Thacher). This EDT option covered 75 miles in 5 days, and was one of the most challenging physical things that I think I’ve ever done. I went in a group of six students and one teacher. Every morning, we would get up at 5:30 so we could start hiking by 6:45. Even though this trip was very demanding, it was also extraordinarily fun. The only person that I had really had contact with before the trip was the faculty member, who had taught me history my Freshman Year, but other than that I knew the others only by their names. Before we started, I was kind of intimidated because I was the youngest person and the only one from my grade on the trip. By the end, I had grown a new respect for the juniors and seniors, and I believe that that was reciprocated. This was a great way to start the year, because not only did I get to go camping, but I had a chance to be with people that I hadn’t seen for three months. Now, all I have to wait for is the spring EDT for another great week in the outdoors.
