Political Action: Another Kind of Education

by Robin :: Tuesday February 5, 2008

It's been awhile since I last posted; senior year has been pretty crazy, what with college applications, homework, and our Senior Exhibitions.

My latest adventure was a trip to Las Vegas to campaign for Barack Obama. My friend Claire and I set out on a Wednesday, and started volunteer training on Thursday morning. That morning, they brought in a  guest speaker to talk to the volunteers. The speaker was John Kerry, and we were literally feet away from him. Later that day we met up with our field organizer and started out canvassing with another group of volunteers, one of whom had been Obama's college roommate. We were out canvassing until dark, and then we returned to the headquarters and started making hundreds of phone calls to potential supporters.

The next day, we mainly stayed in the office phonebanking. Kate Walsh from Grey's Anatomy stopped by for a few hours to phonebank with us, which was pretty crazy. I had a nice little convo with her about Ojai, where she got married last summer. On Saturday, caucus day, we were up at 4:45 to start the day. We first went around our precinct dropping lit at supporters' door to remind them to come out to caucus. Then we returned to headquarters, called the supporters, gave them another reminder to go caucus, and finally, helped organize the caucus itself. We helped facilitate the headcount and talked to undecideds, trying to persuade them to support Obama.

Being involved in the campaign was incredibly interesting, and we met really incredible and passionate people. It was a great opportunity to become involved in the campaign, and to help a cause that Claire and I are both very passionate about. We returned to campus on Sunday morning, and then it was back to school.
