Today is officially the first day of the week known as Dead Week here at Thacher, which means things are changing. After a tough first couple of weeks back at Thacher after Christmas break, during which it seemed like I had an insurmountable amount of work each night, things are slowing back down again as the winter sports season ends. Unfortunately, this means I can no longer look forward to playing basketball every day after school. We lost a tough, nail-biter of a game at Cate last Friday for the last playoff spot in the Condor League. I was, and still am, greatly disappointed that the season is over, especially since I thought we were capable of making a run in the post-season after convincingly defeating a previously undefeated Laguna Blanca squad in our gym. My frustration at the end of this season is only matched by my excitement for next year when we willl only be missing the lone senior from this year’s unit.
Traditionally, the end of winter sports also brings Cultural Weekend. This year I am excited to be able to go hear Colin Powell speak at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. I can’t remember ever having the opportunity to listen to a lecture by person as involved in our government as the former Secretary of State was, so I am pretty excited.
While the lecture on Friday will end my academic week with a treat, my week began with an unexpected surprise today as our school chair, Kaggie, announced that we have a holiday tomorrow. Not only will there not be school tomorrow, but tonight there will be a moonbounce and sumo wrestling suits on the Upper School lawn to celebrate our break. Though it’s always great to have a holiday, I wish it had come a week earlier during my personal crunch. Whatever. At least now we have the beautiful 90 degree February (?!) weather to enjoy!
