The Spirt of Independents

by Maddie :: Wednesday May 18, 2005

I was thrilled when the Independent Afternoon Project Committee passed my proposal for an independent project in studio art for the winter term. Because my friend Megan also got her proposal passed, we would be creating art in the afternoons together. Since we had to have some specific direction, each of us chose an area of concentration; I decided to study the human form, as a whole and as parts. I had taken a figure painting class over the summer in which I came to see the body in shapes and shadows and curves rather than as one big form, and I wanted to expand on what I’d learned. We had so much fun spending time in the art studio, having the freedom to allow our creative energy to flow (and, I’ll admit, listening to the local classic rock station and singing along—but we were productive, too!).

Over the course of the term, I created eight pieces that show the body in unusual ways, often juxtaposed with patterns or incorporating figure-ground relationships. I loved having a flexible schedule in the afternoons and being able to work in my own time and on my terms; I think that’s why I got a lot of good work done.

My art independent project, dancing in the musical, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, and being accepted to the General Studies Program at NYU all contributed to a great winter of my senior year.
