I have had Mr. Perry for English all year, and I have loved every minute of his teaching. In the fall, I took his Coming of Age course, and I am now in his African American Literature class. In Coming of Age, our daily assignments were to write in journals, which we handed in weekly. We were encouraged to write about our lives, how we personally connected to the books we were reading, or what we were feeling at any one moment. I loved having the outlet for personal expression. And my entries were expressions that someone I knew and trusted would read and give me feedback about, which was also good for me. I love to write, so it was an endlessly pleasant assignment. It was not without its challenges, though—at times it was difficult to articulate my feelings about and reactions to a book I truly loved. The books we read were real and relevant to our lives, so it was easy to personally respond to the literature. That made it such an enjoyable class to take; most of the time I didn’t even feel like I was in school.
