Noise in Math-Science

by Leandra :: Wednesday November 21, 2007

Finished up my math quiz, feeling great, and hey, it's Friday- not to mention we leave for Thanksgiving Break in two days. Only an APES (AP Environmental Science) exam stands between me and my break! This past week in particular, has been hefty to say the least since it is the end of the trimester. Therefore, I think everyone would agree in saying that this break is well deserved.

  As I walk out of the math room, I heard yelling from one of the science rooms. These actually sound more like cheers. I wonder what they could be doing in there, recalling all the experiments I have done in my different sciences. From physics, freshmen year, I remember listening to a little machine play frequencies and the class moving all around the classroom, trying to find just the right place in the classroom where the sound waves canceled each other out and there was no sound. I remember the different squeals of excitement as we tried to remain silent as others were listening, trying to settle the excitement of finding that perfect spot. Sophomore year's chemistry classes defined unexpected surprises for me, every day bringing new learning and unanticipated results.

So as I walk through the math/science building courtyard, and ponder what they could be doing. I realize the 'noise' is coming from the EnviSci room, where there is a simulated fish & trade market going on now for lab this week. My class just yesterday had gotten completely into the game, too: working strategies, reading other team's give-away poker faces and getting entirely enthralled in the game.

This kind of 'noise' is not unusual here though. Newcomers be warned or welcomed: we love what we do here and mean it. This is no environment for the weary-hearted or weak-minded!
