This summer has gone by quickly! I’ve spent the past few months working in a clothing store and wedding chapel. Since I was recovering from my knee surgery, I couldn’t do many of my typical summertime activities: waterskiiing, wakeboarding, airchairing, mountain boarding and backpacking; so I poured more energy into my work and the people I met.
At the store, I learned various tasks relating to retail such as selling and purchasing. Mostly, the store stayed fun because I worked with a group of really interesting women who shared some of my random interests, including gourmet food and swing music. Although I am not a clothing nut, for the most part, I enjoyed the time I spent there.
For the last couple months of summer, I worked at the chapel. It was very entertaining. Unlike the typical image of a Las Vegas-y chapel, this one had simple but beautiful decorations and was right on the lake. The people I worked with, as well as the brides and guests, kept me on my toes. My boss was one of the greatest people I’ve met. She wanted me to try new jobs and expand my resume; so she had me doing anything from receptionist work to accounts payable to wedding coordination. She also lived and worked by the core values that I have found at Thacher and find very important for schools, friends and jobs (known at Thacher as “Honor, Fairness, Kindness and Truth”). All in all, the summer working was a blast and I hope to return full-time at the chapel next summer and part-time at the store.
After I quit work, I had a week left or so before I took off for college—. My knee was getting much better and I could spend my time at the beach, hiking and fly fishing. Then, I drove across Nevada and Utah to Telluride where I met up with some of my family and had a great time.
Upon arriving to at school-Colorado College-I think it will be a good place for me. I have landed a single room in a fun dorm where my hall is very friendly. I felt that I took a leap deciding on this college without visiting it but I fell pretty well adjusted after only four days! The campus is cheery and accepting like Thacher but much bigger.
My first class will be a history class and I am super excited about learning and life. The only problem is that I talk about Thacher all the time! The adventures I had, the friends I made and the things I learned will forever be in my heart. I really grabbed onto life and new expierences there; I think it will be a lifestyle I continue with forever.
Until my next update, I hope the begining of the year is as fun as it always was for me there. I’ll be in touch.
