Hi, my name is Julie, and I’m a sophomore from Seoul, South Korea. I found out about Thacher through my sister, who attended another boarding school in California, and coming to Thacher as a freshmen was definitely one of the best choices I’ve ever made.
What I like best about living/studying at Thacher:
Thacher’s unique atmosphere is what makes studying – and living- here so amazing. Because we’re such a small school, everyone gets to know each other (our headmaster, Mr. Mulligan, has a “Burrito Bet,” and buys students a burrito if he doesn’t know their names by the second week of school)
and being surrounded by such an amazing group of students motivates and challenges me to do more then I imagined possible.
My favorite class is/classes are because
It’s impossible for me to pick my favorite class when I love all my classes (and teachers!) English and history are equally dear to me for the great class discussions that inspire me to think “outside the box,” and the projects and proofs we get to do in math make it amazing. Chinese in itself is amazing to learn, and the Chemistry labs make me look forward to wednesdays. Classes at Thacher may be challenging, but they’re all worthwhile!
People at Thacher—peers, schoolmates, faculty, staff, others—who have influenced me positively and how:
I sit in the music practice rooms with an instrument at least once every other day. This is something that I would never have done voluntarily before Thacher, but being surrounded by others who love their music has allowed me to see my own passion.
Advice for someone thinking about going away to school or specifically coming to Thacher:
Boarding school is not a choice that should be made for you. There is a perfect fit for everyone, and you shouldn’t choose a school for it’s reputation. Aside from that, here’s my other piece of advice: Don’t worry. Leaving home is a little scary for everyone, but everyone will be there to help you adjust.
