It is surely a new experience to be in charge of someone other than myself, but as a Senior Prefect, that’s my situation. At 10:00 p.m., when a surge of girls pours in to the dorm, I put down my book and raise myself up from the comfortable chair I’ve been studying in. It’s time for check-in. So far nobody has been late: all nine of my prefectees seem to be on-time girls.
I remember my sophomore year being the hardest, just as everybody had warned me: the leap from freshmen year to sophomore year is the greatest. Tonight, as I knock and open the door, I notice that the girls are definitely going through the same thing: they had two essays in a week and are exhausted. But when I ask them how their day was, they smile brightly and say it was fun. Sometimes I stay for more chitchat and sometimes I let them go back to their studying.
It’s unbelievable to me that it only has been a couple of weeks, but I already feel comfortable with the girls in my dorm, love every one of them, every day a bit more than before!
