My name is Julia (Joo Won is my Korean name), and I am currently a senior (though I can’t believe it!). I started attending Thacher as a freshman. I am from Seoul, Korea, and when I found about Thacher on line, I could not wait to learn how to horseback-ride! After freshmen year, instead of riding I started playing other sports such as tennis and lacrosse after school. I often see people ride by as I walk down to the field; it’s a scene reminiscent of that first year.
Like best about Thacher:
You can always approach someone if you’re having a hard time. Everybody is willing to listen to you, and everyone cares about you.
Favorite class:
Chinese. Because there are only four people in my class, we all get to talk a lot in the language. This summer, I’m going to China, and I feel like I’m ready to meet some native speakers!
People at Thacher who’ve influenced me:
My advisor, Mrs. Hooper, has been very supportive of me since freshman year. Last year, she was my English teacher and helped me a whole lot in class; as my lacrosse coach, she pushed me so that I could improve.
Advice for kids considering boarding school or Thacher:
Don’t be afraid to leave your family, because you’re not going to lose them. In fact, you only gain. You get to live with the Thacher family – which maybe seems too big to be called that, but it’s as comforting and friendly as your own.
My experience at Thacher has been…
challenging, full of memories, very rewarding. I’ve learned so much else besides academics.
