Something New: Asanas & Health

by Douglas :: Sunday January 27, 2008

Because this is my senior year at Thacher, I've decided to take advantage of every new opportunity that Thacher has to offer me, knowing that this is my last chance.

This is exactly why I chose to practice yoga for my winter sport. Not every Thacher student is allowed to sign up for this class, and it is only available to seniors and injured underclassmen. Honestly, taking yoga was the best decision I've made this year. Surprisingly, there was a huge turn-out this season, and almost a quarter of the senior class is doing it. Because yoga doesn't always provide the cardio exercise that we need, the class begins with a 45 minute period for personal training and aerobic work. Then, all of us meet in the Study Hall for a yoga session with a yogini from town.

Doing yoga has relieved my life of so much stress, and I've never felt so healthy and good. Every day, we learn different "asanas"(poses), and have the time to take a healthy break from schoolwork and assignments. Weekly, we take a field trip to local yoga studios, organic farms, the beach, etc, learning about different yoga practices and other methods of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Trying this new "sport" and experimenting with an entirely new activity has made this trimester so fun, and that is exactly what I want for my senior year.
