My favorite class this year is AP Spanish. Despite the fact that it is the most challenging course I am taking right now, it is the most enjoyable. Because I spent a month in Mexico this summer, I've felt prepared for the work so far. Typically, we write two to three essays a week, in addition to grammar exercises. So far we have written papers on U.S. immigration policy, Thacher's environmentally friendly practices, and José Guadalupe Posada's art. The class is a really great size; there are only six students, giving us a lot of opportunities to talk and practice our Spanish. Right now we are watching a movie called
El Norte, the fictional story of two indigenous Guatemalan siblings who leave their home to pursue freedom and a better life in "The North"--the United States. The movie follows their journey to Los Angeles, focusing on their escape and the problems they encounter. I am finding it really difficult to understand a lot of the dialogue, which is confusing, occasionally muffled, and sometimes in a Mayan tongue. Even so, it is nice to take a break from lecture and class discussion to watch a good movie.
