Taking In Every Moment

by Chris :: Wednesday September 27, 2006

With this new year, I have now passed the halfway mark of my time here at Thacher. So far so good. The past two years have been the most memorable years of my life. I can’t pick out the best part of those two years, though, and I don’t think I will be able to until much later in my life. When I think back and try to recall the most amazing moment of the past two years, I, of course, think of the big football and basketball wins, the time spent with my friends during the summer, the best weekends, the best speakers… so many things to consider. But during the summer, a couple of weeks before my return to Thacher, I realized that maybe it won’t one of those big moments that sticks out in my memory. The best moment, which might be seemingly insignificant right now, could actually have the biggest impact on the rest of my life. It could come in a simple conversation with one of my teachers or a friend or a word of advice not even really detected by the giver or the receiver of it.

I have learned that the simple things really do matter. This year I aim to be more alert to those pieces of advice handed to me. Yes, I know that the big wins and the most intriguing drama of the year will stand out to me when I reflect upon my junior year in high school. But I’m going to make sure that I get something out of the moments that don’t seem so big, because I know that here at Thacher every moment has its own importance, and I’m thinking that it just might be one of these moments that has the biggest impact on my life.
