Lucky Switch to Defense

by Chris :: Sunday April 9, 2006

This spring season I play lacrosse. Last year, my friend Bruno and I were the worst players of freshmen lacrosse by a large margin. We were both middies, and our coach (who happened to be our Head of School) Mr. Mulligan would always give us a firm, but faithful look as it was our turn to sub in. And as we returned to the bench, low spirited and exhausted, he’d give us a look more understanding than anything else. He was a cool coach, but not even his enthusiasm could turn Bruno and me into lacrosse studs; we simply weren’t cut out to be mid-fielders. I was always in Mully’s ear about switching me to defense. I was mainly interested in switching to long pole because I figured all they had to do was hit people and most importantly, they didn’t have to run half as much as I did playing mid-field. In the final seconds of our last freshmen lacrosse game, Coach finally gave in to my request. It was the most fun I had had playing lacrosse in my first year’s experience.

Bruno moved on to get an Independent Project in the spring season in piano—a good move if you ask me. The first chance I got I bought a defensive long pole because varsity tryouts were the next day. I knew I could be a half decent defender without any practice with a long pole because I was athletic and physical enough, but I just knew I had no chance to make the Varsity Team because I couldn’t play lacrosse to save my life. I was more than anything joking with my friends when I told them I had a shot at making the Varsity squad. But with every practice, I got better and better, and some how I made the team. This was mostly due to the injury of our best defender James Allison who broke his leg in a soccer game.

I like lacrosse a lot more now, and our season has kicked off to a good start. We were 3 and 1 until we lost a close game to RLS, and I’m looking forward to our next game.
