This past weekend, my Spanish teacher, Ms. Ortiz, drove six students and me to an orphanage in La Misiòn, Mexico, an hour from Tijuana. It was my first time going to Mexico and my first orphanage visit, but hopefully not my last. The drive down there was about six hours, which gave me more than enough time to bond with the juniors, being that I was the only sophomore.
At the orphanage, with children who were infants to kids my age, I did everything from sitting on a couch cradling a baby girl in my arms, to playing or trying to play soccer. My knowledge of horses after freshmen year helped me come up with a very imaginative game with a rocking horse and two little boys.
This was and wasn’t a camping trip. I woke up in a sleeping bag, but I was excited to start my day and get to help others. I was sore, not my legs from climbing uphill, but my arms from carrying Raùl, a little boy who loved to be held. At night I was ready to sleep, not because I hiked all day, but because I just finished playing soccer.
