Being on the dance team this fall has been one of the best Thacher activities I have ever been involved in. After settling into my new room and schedule in September, I began to feel guilty pangs about the figure skating training I had left at home in Idaho. Figure skating was the core of my summer: I usually had twice-a-day practices for about six days of the week. It was difficult for me to have to put aside my training when I returned to Thacher.

Once the fall dance term began, though, I knew I was in good hands. Mrs. Vickery (a.k.a. Ms. Vic), the dance instructor, showed me the strengths I had not yet developed, which muscles needed to be strengthened for better jumps, and how to maintain balance on the balls of my feet for a long time. We worked on ballet, modern, and jazz dance, each providing me with new insight to choreography and stylistic movement.

Every day of dance class, I have felt huge personal improvement, which I know will carry over to my skating. Any remorse I felt at the beginning of the season for not being on the ice has turned into extreme happiness, because dance training has been a refining and beneficial supplement to my figure skating.

I’ve learned that there is always a new way to study what you love; it is just a matter of finding it, and then applying it.
