Last quarter began with a source of new and unexpected fun: my South African History course. As a sophomore, I was allowed to choose two history electives for second semester, one elective to be completed in the first nine weeks, and the second in the remaining nine weeks.
South African History appealed to me at first because I had always been perplexed by the issues behind Apartheid and the radical nature of separation between Europeans and South African natives. My course began with a description of the three main sects of natives prior to European settlement, and then developed slowly to reveal the depth behind huge social complications today.
The class culminated in a twelve-minute oral report on one issue in South Africa today. My partner and I looked at whether South African government should remain a regional economic power, or concentrate on the global market. The project was difficult at first, but by the end, we were both confident and had a strong powerpoint to display our research. By studying South Africa, I gained a detailed understanding of a country on the road to recovery.
