Making Music

by Alina :: Thursday March 23, 2006

Juggling a musical instrument with sports and academics has been a challenging feat for me this year. I have played classical violin (occasionally celtic or bluegrass, too) for about 12 years now. When I came to Thacher, I knew things would be different, and I was prepared to make a major shift in how much attention I gave to my practice, in favor of academics. However, there are more opportunities to play than I thought possible. Our music director, Mr. Haggard, sets up a time during one of the free periods we have each day to meet with a private instructor if we request one. In addition to this, we have recitals (mostly accompanied by piano), coffeehouses, and independent projects, where musical students can opt to substitute one sports term with the study of his or her instrument.
