Science Shift & An Independent Project

by Alex :: Tuesday January 17, 2006

In terms of school, this semester I picked up two new classes (AP Physics C Mechanics ended in December). The first, AP Macroeconomics, is a semester-long course, and the second, Evolution, is a fourth-quarter elective. I am looking forward to both classes: taking a “soft science” will be a nice break from physics. In fact, the second semester already seems to have a different tone about it, and I definitely feel a little more relaxed (mainly because the last grading period applicable to college admissions is over). My English class has also shifted to a short stories elective, and I am currently struggling to create a modern re-telling of the second and third temptations of Christ. After writing analytical pieces for so long, writing a short story is a painfully slow and awkward process (or at least initially).

In terms of extracurricular activities, this has been one of the best semesters of my Thacher career. Instead of a more traditional sports option, I have been approved for my Independent Project on Ayn Rand (see prior posts), and her two works Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. When I am not reading Rand or other philosophers, I spend my time working out in the gym or sometimes I join in on JV Basketball or Third Team Soccer practices. I hope to have finished three essays by the end of this sports trimester, and I have already begun preparing notes for a presentation I plan to give.
