Making Sport of Community Service

by Alex :: Sunday November 6, 2005

The sports trimester is almost over and I am taking my last few visits to the Ojai Library. My sports option this term was community service (a senior only privilege), which involved crowding into a Thacher Suburban and driving down to the local public library after school to tutor. Most of the kids there are between 3rd and 6th graders, and it has been great getting to know them. For the next term, I am trying to get something called an Independent Project passed. Instead of playing a more traditional sport (I played basketball the last three years) I hope to spend every day after school studying World War II era literature, focusing on the works of Ayn Rand and their connection to the forms of government at the time (fascism, national socialism, communism, and democracy). If all goes according to plan, after I finish reading the material, I will write a few essays and present my findings in a lecture to those interested. I would also spend some of the time exercising, joining in on some soccer and basketball scrimmages, and lifting at the new Fitness Center.

On a totally unrelated subject, this coming Tuesday (11/8) I am going to serve as a Clerk for the California Special Statewide Election. I’ve always been interested in government and I thought that serving as an election clerk would be a memorable experience, as well as a great way to improve my knowledge of the whole process. The day itself will be exhausting as it starts at 6:15 am and ends at 9:30 pm. I’m not sure what to expect, but I don’t think Ojai will be the busiest precinct. Anyway, after the election I will be sure to tell you how it goes.
