Trying it Out

by Adriana :: Saturday January 21, 2006

It’s been great since I’ve come back from break. I have returned to JV Soccer, which is a lot of fun. It feels like I learn something new every day. My experience with this team is interesting because I had never really played soccer before. I had played with my brother but it was so different. There are so many things to think about when you play: it’s is not just about kicking the ball into a goal but also about working with your team and working as one to be able to score. There are defense, midfielders, and forwards; everyone has to communicate and give support to one another. You always hear from your coach to run through the ball, be aggressive and be first to it, but you never realize how effective the methods are until you are in a game situation.

Today we had a game. Although we did not win, we tied at 0-0, and it seemed that we played very well. Everyone was giving 110 percent. It is a lot of fun but also stressing at times because you want to have fun but then you also want to win. It is in human nature to strive to be the best and soccer is something that I wish to be good at. Another reason why I am motivated for playing soccer is that hopefully I will be in good shape for lacrosse. Lacrosse is another sport that is fantastic to play, which I hadn’t played before I came to Thacher. I had no idea as to what it was and how you played it. In some ways, I personally think it is a lot like soccer, except that you have sticks to catch the ball, not your legs, and that you have much smaller and harder ball.

Thacher gives you a great opportunity to try new things, although it as little hard freshmen year to get really serious about a sport because you have a horse to take care of. Last year I was a freshman and my priority was taking care of the horse but then I also wanted to play lacrosse. It was hard at first because you only went to practice twice a week and that does not give you a lot of time to develop your skills regarding the sport; sophomore year you have the option of riding which too is a lot of fun or playing a sport. Thacher offers a variety of sports: rock climbing, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, basketball, football, basketball, baseball, track and others that I might be forgetting. The School gives you an opportunity to experiment and see what you like which is very nice because you do not always know what you like unless you try.
